{"id":2367,"date":"2025-06-11T11:04:31","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T11:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neurocraft.dev\/kaku\/?p=2367"},"modified":"2025-06-11T11:04:32","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T11:04:32","slug":"post-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neurocraft.dev\/kaku\/post-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Post 4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>John Clarke<\/strong>&nbsp;(1802 \u2013 1879) was an English&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baptists\">Baptist<\/a>&nbsp;minister and missionary, who served in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamaica\">Jamaica<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bioko\">Fernando Po<\/a>&nbsp;(an island off the coast of West Africa). He is the author of a collection of comparative vocabulary in numerous West African languages, published in 1848\/9,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Clarke_(Baptist_missionary)#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;as well as a grammar of the Fernandian (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bube_language\">Bube<\/a>) language of Fernando Po.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Clarke_(Baptist_missionary)#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarke first went to Jamaica in 1829 and worked as a teacher and Baptist minister in Kingston,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Town\">Spanish Town<\/a>, and elsewhere until 1840, when he was sent with George K. Prince to investigate the possibilities of founding a mission in West Africa. They landed in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bioko\">Fernando Po<\/a>&nbsp;in January 1841.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Clarke_(Baptist_missionary)#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In 1842, Clarke went back to Jamaica and England to recruit volunteers for the mission, returning in February 1844 with a party of Jamaican teachers and settlers, among them the 18-year-old&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Jackson_Fuller\">Joseph Jackson Fuller<\/a>, who was later to become famous himself as a missionary.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Clarke_(Baptist_missionary)#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Clarke\u00a0(1802 \u2013 1879) was an English\u00a0Baptist\u00a0minister and missionary, who served in\u00a0Jamaica\u00a0and\u00a0Fernando Po\u00a0(an island off the coast of West Africa).
